Kicking off any discussion or thoughts about future meetings of the club with a discussion of what or who you’d like to see. Check out the shared file to make topic of special guest suggestions: Urbanism Club Topics & Guests - Google Docs.
Hi everyone,
Here is an update after the Urbanism Club meeting yesterday. We had a productive (if small) meeting focusing on how to make this group most effective for the east end, and discussing some possible topics for future meetings.
Next Meeting: Since next week is March Break, I’m curious how many people plan to attend the meeting. Please let me know via a quick email or message if you plan to attend.
Discussion Highlights:
-
Meeting Cadence: We discussed an appropriate meeting frequency (and whether the Tuesday date worked for people) given less attendance in week 2. Curious if people have thoughts on frequency or whether the Tuesday date works for them.
-
For example, meeting every two weeks might allow us to maintain regular meetings while using less of peoples’ time. This could also lead to a meeting each month with an invited speaker, and one with a regular discussion topic.
-
Neighbourhood Spotlights: We talked about taking turns sharing some of the urbanism issues relating to our own local neighbourhood, sort of “Intro to my community.” This would allow members to highlight any unique history, transportation challenges, and local issues of their specific communities. If you’re interested in sharing your community, let me know.
-
Future Planning: We are looking toward the fall election to formulate intelligent urbanism questions for all-candidate meetings. We also discussed the possibility of reaching out to a broader demographic, including immigrant communities and local youth, to hear their lived experiences of navigating the East End.
Call for Speakers & Topics: I have a running list of suggested guests and topics I’ve previously shared. If you have a specific speaker in mind or a neighborhood issue you’d like to spotlight, please let me know: Urbanism Club Topics & Guests - Google Docs.
